Gennady Kozovoy was born on January 5, 1951, in Cheremkhovo, Irkutsk region, Russia. He graduated from the Cheremkhovo Mountain Technical School in 1970 and later earned a degree in Electrification and Automation of Mining Operations from the Irkutsk Polytechnic Institute in 1978. He furthered his education by obtaining a Doctor of Engineering degree.
Rise to Success
Kozovoy's career began in the coal industry. From 1978, he worked at the Raspadskaya mine, starting as an electrician and rising through the ranks to become a chief engineer. In 1991, he became the chairman of the supervisory board of Raspadskaya Ltd, and subsequently, the CEO in 1993. Under his leadership, Raspadskaya grew to become a major coking coal producer. In 2012, Kozovoy and his partners sold control of Raspadskaya to Evraz, receiving shares in return.
