Gennady Ivanovich Kozovoy was born on January 5, 1951, in Cheremkhovo, Irkutsk region, Russia. He graduated from the Cheremkhovo mountain technical school in 1970. He furthered his education at the Irkutsk Polytechnic Institute, specializing in the electrification and automation of mining operations, graduating in 1978.
Rise to Success
Kozovoy's career in the coal industry began in 1978 at the Raspadskaya mine, where he worked as an electrician. He advanced through various roles, including deputy chief engineer, and chief of the tunnelling block. In 1991, he became the chairman of the supervisory board of Raspadskaya Ltd, and later, in 1993, he was appointed CEO. Under his leadership, Raspadskaya became one of the first privatized mines in Russia. Kozovoy played a key role in preparing Raspadskaya for its IPO, which was a significant milestone in his career. His influence extended beyond Raspadskaya, as he also served as CEO of other coal companies, demonstrating his expertise and leadership within the sector. In 2012, he and his partner sold their shares in Raspadskaya to Evraz, transitioning to a stake in the steel and mining company.
