Early Life
Daniel Sundheim was born outside of Philadelphia and grew up influenced by his father's interest in investing, despite his father's medical profession and his mother being an occupational therapist. Sundheim graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Economics in 1999.
Rise to Success
Sundheim's career began at Bear Stearns in the Merchant Banking Group, focusing on private equity investments. He then joined Viking Global Investors in 2002, where he spent 15 years, rising to Co-Chief Investment Officer in 2010 and becoming the sole CIO in 2014. In 2018, Sundheim founded D1 Capital Partners in New York City, using over $500 million of his own money to start the firm. D1 Capital Partners quickly became one of the top-performing hedge funds and manages a mix of public and private investments.
Key Business Strategies
Sundheim's business philosophy emphasizes flexibility and a long-term view, which is reflected in his founding of D1 Capital Partners. D1 Capital invests across various sectors, including technology, healthcare, and consumer markets, adapting strategies to market changes. In 2020, D1 returned 60% and has also had strong gains in private investments.
Philanthropy
Daniel Sundheim and his wife, Brett, are actively involved in philanthropy, supporting education, healthcare, and the arts. They have made significant contributions, including a $10 million gift to the University of Pennsylvania to create the Sundheim International Scholars Fund, a $7.5 million gift for a new humanities building at Ransom Everglades School, and $5 million to the UHealth—University of Miami Health System.
