Early Life and Career
Cheah Cheng Hye was born in Penang, Malaysia, in 1954, into an ethnic Chinese family. He attended Penang Free School and started his career in journalism after graduating. He worked as a reporter, subeditor, and editorial writer for The Star (Malaysia) newspaper. In 1974, he moved to Hong Kong and worked as a financial journalist for various publications, including The Standard, the Asian Wall Street Journal, and the Far Eastern Economic Review.
Rise to Success
Cheah transitioned from journalism to finance, joining Morgan Grenfell Group in Hong Kong in 1989, where he established the Hong Kong/China equities research department and became the head of research and proprietary trader. In 1993, he co-founded Value Partners with V-Nee Yeh, which later became the first asset management company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2007. Cheah served as the Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Value Partners until January 2025, when he became the Honorary Chairman. He is regarded as a leading practitioner of value investing in Asia and beyond.
