Early Life
Charles Simonyi was born Károly Simonyi on September 10, 1948, in Budapest, Hungary. His father was a professor of electrical engineering. As a teenager, Simonyi showed an early interest in computers and worked as a night watchman at a computer laboratory, learning to program. He left Hungary at the age of 17. He moved to the United States in 1968.
Rise to Success
Simonyi's career began at Xerox PARC in 1972, where he created the first WYSIWYG text editor called Bravo. He received his BS in Engineering Mathematics & Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972 and a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1977. In 1981, he joined Microsoft, playing a crucial role in the development of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other successful applications. Simonyi left Microsoft in 2002 and founded Intentional Software Corporation.
Key Business Strategies
At Microsoft, Simonyi was instrumental in introducing object-oriented programming and the Hungarian notation system, which significantly impacted software development. His focus on user-friendly software and innovative features helped drive the company's growth. The acquisition of Intentional Software by Microsoft in 2017 brought Simonyi back to the company.
Philanthropy
Simonyi is an active philanthropist. He established the Charles and Lisa Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences in 2003, which provides grants to organizations in the arts, sciences, and education. He has funded professorships at the University of Oxford, Stanford University, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
